Windows Defender service was stopped

Weird Windows Defender behavior...

Howdy, y'all,

When I start the Windows Defender UI from Control Panel, it's not running. When I click "Click here to turn it on," I see the hourglass cursor, which is replaced by the pointer after a few seconds. I then see an error dialog with the error ID 800106ba. Don't have Macafee AV installed; using MSE instead.

Using services.msc, saw that Window Defender service was stopped, and Startup Type was "manual." Tried to start WinDef service, but a warning dialog came up within coupla seconds; it reads, "The Windows Defender service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs." Also, the description of Windows Defender looks incorrect: "<Failed to read description. Error code: 1168>" Changed startup type to Automatic, but WinDef service doesn't keep running.

Any ideas about what's wrong?

Windows® Defender is turned off by Microsoft® Security Essentials.
Once you install MSE Windows® Defender is no longer needed, this since
MSE provides all the needed protection.

MSE provides Antivirus protection, in real-time.
MSE provides AntiMalware (and AntiSpyware) protection in real-time.
