Unlocking files on a usb connected xp hard drive

I am trying to recover my files from an old hard drive (windows xp) connected to my new windows 7 machine via a usb hard drive enclosure.  The folders under my password protected user identity come up as empty.  How do I get in there and retrieve my files?

Hi,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

Could you please answer these below questions?

a)     Could you tell us how did you password protected the file?

b)     Also could you tell us how are you trying to unlock the files?

Here you need to login as administrator to perform the below steps.

First let’s give file permissions and check if that works.

Follow these steps:

1. Right-click on the folder and select Properties, then go to Security tab, and click Edit.

2. A new window will open, now under “Group and User Names”, select the user from the list whom you want to deny / allow access to a specific folder, now under “Permissions for Users” check the Deny / Allow checkbox next to Modify (all other checkbox will get ticked automatically).

3. Click OK and then click Yes when a Windows Security window will pops-up.

4. Now click OK again and you are done.

You can try accessing the file and check for the issue.
