I had a malware virus and now I cannot change my desktop background, how can I fix this?

My best friends mother used to be a librarian (so she has some knowledge about computers with windows 7... definitely more than what I have)  and she was able to quarenteen the virus. All of my files became hidden and I had a picture of Jake Gyllenhaal up as the background before the virus hit. The picture stayed, and now it won't leave even after the virus was quarenteened and such.  I've tried multiple times to go into the whole "change background" thing but nothing seems to work....I don't really mind having Jake as my background but he's over stayed his welcome, and quite frankly i'm getting sick of him at the moment. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thank you!
