Fix a corrupted user profile

Hi,

I'm confused by some of the steps in the above instructions.  In step 7, where is says copy all files except Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log and Ntuser.ini files, does it mean copy all files except those files starting with Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log, etc or just those specific files?  I don't see an Ntuser.dat.log file but I do have two versions of that file Ntuser.dat.log1 and Ntuser.dat.log2.  I don't see any file name or partial file name with Ntuser.ini.  I have a file name NTUSER.DAT and three other file names beginning with NTUSER.DAT (one ending in .blf and other two ending in regtrans-ms).  Could anyone advise which files I do and do not copy?

Hello there,

Log into the new user account. After doing that, click the start menu and type in folder options, then press enter. Click the view tab and select 'show hidden files, folders and drivers'. Once you've selected that, click apply then ok.

Next, click the start menu and click computer. Double-click the hard drive (usually C:) and from the folders that appear, click users. Select the name of your old user. Select EVERYTHING there, except for the following:

  • Ntuser.dat

  • Ntuser.dat.log

  • Ntuser.ini

Right-click the folders you've selected and click copy. Once you've copied them, click the back icon and you should be returned to C:/users. Select your new user profile. Delete everything that's there, except for the three files which are listed in the bullet points above.

Once you've deleted everything, right-click and select paste. The folders you selected from your old user profile should now be in your new user profile.
