"Access is denied" - "Unable to display current owner"

I am on a Windows 7 Home Premium system. When I try to open a ENTERTAINMENT folder I get "Access is denied". The same happens when logged in with the system administrator account. When I right-click the folder and choose Properties > Security, the Current owner field shows "Unable to display current owner." And it won't allow either of the listed administrator accounts to take ownership. When I choose Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner, the Current owner field also shows "Unable to display current owner." When I set permissions, I get the following error:

An error occurred while applying security settings to:

(folder path here)

Access is denied

How can I get permission to change the permissions?
I have turned off the User Account Access, still not opening.  please help me.

Hi Subha,

It would great if you can provide more information regarding this issue. Please do answer to these questions:

1)       Were you able to access the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder on the computer in the past? If yes, what are the recent changes that you have made to the computer prior to this issue?

2)       Where is the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder located? Is it on the same internal hard disk where Windows is installed or an external hard disk connected to the computer?

3)       Are you able to access any other folders on the same location?

4)       How many administrator accounts do you have on this computer? Did you try logging into different admin accounts and check if the same issue exist on all the accounts?

5)       Do you have any third party security program installed on the computer?

In this scenario, let’s enable the built-in administrator account and then try giving the ownership of the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder to the Administrators group of the computer. I would suggest you to try the following methods and check if that resolves the issue.

Enable the built-in administrator account and give the ownership of the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder to all the Administrators on the computer.

a)       Click on the “Start” button and type “cmd” in the search box on the Start Menu.

b)       Right click on the “cmd.exe” icon from the search result and select “Run as administrator” from its context menu to open the Command Prompt in elevated mode.

c)       In the command prompt window, type the following command and press  then “Enter”:

net user administrator /active:yes

d)       Type net user administrator password, and then press “Enter”. (You should see a message that the command completed successfully. Note: If you haven’t set any password for the inbuilt administrator on the computer in the past, then you may keep it blank and press “Enter”.)

e)       Type “Exit”, and then press “Enter”.

f)        Log off from the current user account and login to the built-in administrator account. (You’ll now see the built-in administrator account as an option on the login screen).

g)       From the built-in administrator account, you need to open the Command Prompt in elevated mode again.

h)       Type the following commands to give the ownership of the folder to all the administrators on the computer.

takeown /F “Enter the complete path of the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder” /a /r /d y

icacls “Enter the complete path of the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder” /grant administrators:F /t

i)         Wait for the process to complete and at the end, it should show the message “Successfully processed “n” files …..

You may now try accessing the “ENTERTAINMENT” folder from the administrator accounts on the computer and check if that resolves the issue.

If the issue persists, then please do get back to us with all the additional information and your findings that you have come across while performing the above steps.
