You need to check the audio properties of Windows 7. Right-click the speaker icon in the lower right taskbar. Choose recording devices. As you are using an analog microphone input (3.5 mm male connectors) you need to set the high definition audio device as the Default recording device. What you have done this, click the Properties button. Then click the Levels tab. Make sure the audio is up about two thirds of the way.

As you speak into the microphone (keep the microphone element about 1/2 inch off the corner of your mouth) you should see the volume meter moving in the recording devices dialog box. The microphone you are using may well work in a quiet environment, but it is not designed for speech recognition. Speech recognition requires the highest quality audio input. It also requires that this audio input not be distorted by electronic noise or background noise. A good noise canceling USB microphone will make using Windows speech recognition pleasurable and accurate. The USB audio input bypasses the soundcard built into your computer. These soundcards built into the computer very often are not well shielded and introduce electronic noise into the audio stream. The USB audio input injects the audio directly into the CPU.
