Not playing MPEG-4 (.m4a) in windows media player

I was trying to play an MPEG-4 (.m4a) Audio file, but I am not able to. I get the following notification, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I have Cyber link Power DVD 9. I am able to play the files in that. However I wanted to know whether there is any fix to Windows media player. This player came bundled with Windows 7 proffessional OS.

Open Media Player and go to...Help / About...to find
version number.

Media Player 12 should play MPEG 4 files but if not...
you could try downloading and installing a codec pack.

No guarantees...but maybe the following codec pack
would be worth a try:

(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)
