COM surrogate has stopped working

Hi, I am getting an error saying COM surrogate has stopped working while viewing pictures in Windows Photo Viewer. This is on a brand new computer , with minimal installed programs, no installed codecs I know of. I have also turned off Data Execution Prevention for COM surrogate, with no effect.

Hi Zachus,

It looks like you are getting the error “COM surrogate has stopped working”.

1.Did you make any changes to the computer recently?

2.Which security software is installed on the computer?

Method 1.

1.Go to Start.

2.Right click on Computer, and select Properties.

3.Click on Advanced System Settings, click the Advanced Tab,

4.In the Performance section, click Settings.

5.Select the "Data Execution Protection" tab, and then click 'Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select' option.

6.Click the Add button, and then browse to C:\Windows\System32\dllhost.exe

7.Click Open, click OK on the warning message.

8.Click Apply/OK.

9.Try to access the folders again.

Method 2.

You can run the Microsoft Safety Scanner to make sure that the computer is free from viruses.

Microsoft Safety Scanner: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

Hope this helps.
