Cannot open JPEG files

I am using windows 7 home and have over 1000 JPEG's in My Pictures.  I have just logged in to view some of the JPEGs and found that none of them will open in any package I try.  When I open in Photoshop I get an error that the file cannot be opened as it may be truncated or incomplete.  Windows photo viewer just comes up with an error that it does not support the file format.  I have also tried copying some of the files onto a memory stick and using a different computer but I get the same result.  Also tried removing the metadata but get an error code 0x88982F50.

I have taken JPEG files from another PC and tried to open these on the problem machine and they open fine.  Anti-virus comes up empty as does a check of the system files. Anyone know what to try next?

Hi,

1.    Were there any changes made on the computer prior to the issue?

2.    What happens when you double click and open the file directly?

3.    What is the complete and exact error message?

4.    Are you able to open the same files on a different computer?

Method 1:

First, I would suggest you to check if you are able to open the same files on a different computer and check if you face any issue.

Method 2:

I would suggest you to check if the extension of the file is “.jpeg”. Let us know if they have a different extension.

Method 3:

I would suggest you to refer to the articles and set the defaults for the file types:

Change which programs Windows uses by default

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-which-programs-Windows-uses-by-default

Change default programs using Set Program Access and Computer Defaults

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-default-programs-using-Set-Program-Access-and-Computer-Defaults

Let us know the results.

Hi thanks for the reply I will try and answer the questions one at a time.

1) No changes have been made to the computer that I am aware of prior to finding this fault, no new software has been installed or uninstalled
2) When I double click on the file it try's to open in Windows Live Photo Gallery, the error message I get is "Photo Gallery can't open this photo or video.  The file may be unsupported, damaged or corrupted."
3) See above
4) I have copied the files to another PC and still get the same result.

Method 1 - see above

Method 2 - The files are JPEG images with the extension (.jpg)

Method 3 - I have tried the following programs to open the files and none of them have been successful:

Windows Photo Gallery
Windows Paint
Windows Photo viewer
Coral Paintshop Pro x4
Photoshop CS4

I have tried "Open With" and the above plus I have used the method you state above to alter the default access program to the each of them in turn again without success.
Additional information, I have also checked the file size and they are registering none zero file size typically between 1 and 1.5MB.

For what-ever reason...it sounds like your .jpg files are corrupted.

There are software programs designed to repair corrupted .jpg
files but most are expensive and probably not 100% successful.

Just a few examples:

JPEGsnoop
http://www.impulseadventure.com/photo/jpeg-snoop.html
(free)

The following programs are not free but the demo
versions will preview the files that can be recovered.

PixRecovery

Stellar Phoenix Digital Media Recovery

JPEG Recovery

If the recovery programs cannot recover the photos...
it is probably a lost cause.
