Windows 7 Ultimate Crashes and Restarts When I Wake It From Sleep.

I have built a new professional audio rig which does go to sleep fine (though it takes 30 seconds or so) but when I wake it, the screen stays black for a while (45 seconds or so) and then I see the post screen as though I had just turned it on. I then get the "start windows normally" screen followed by another 30-40 seconds of the “starting windows” splash. Everything else loads normally and I’m greeted with this “Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown” error message.

Here is the additional info from this message:

The most recent crashes were Related to nvlddmkm.sys nVidia Display Driver.  You have the current driver which has a known problem.  I would revert back to an older driver (say 6 months older) and get it from your computer MFR.  Drivers from nVidia are generic ones from the mfr specific.

Thank you so much for your reply. This is a custom build, so there is no MFR specific driver for me, and the drivers on the Card MFR (Galaxy) page are the same as NVIDIA, so I'm currently just going back and installing previous NVIDIA drivers one by one until I find one that works. I'm 5 versions back at the moment (320.18 May 23 2013) and still no luck. Any other ideas or suggestions.

Thanks again

Guess its time to get more aggressive with this issue.  Lets run an Xperf trace

In order to diagnose your computers issue please follow the below instructions

Open an elevated command prompt and run the applicable trace.

For Standby+Resume: (issues when resuming from sleep)

xbootmgr -trace standby -traceFlags BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER -resultPath C:\TEMP

When it is finished the trace will be in C:\TEMP and have an extension of "ETL"

Compress the trace and upload it to your skydrive (or any file sharing service) and put a link to them in your next post.

Thanks again for your help, zigzag. I can put the hardware together and everything, but things like this are a whole other story.

I had no idea about tools like these. Looks like a ton of information. Very cool/interesting. This is all new territory for me, but I can usually follow directions pretty well.

I've uploaded the trace results, as well as the minidumps from my NVIDIA driver trials yesterday, here:

Hope this helps. Thank you.

This one is not 100% definitive but it appears related to your Marvel RAID.  Either Disk 3 is causing the RAID to timeout, or the RAID is.

What is the date on the RAID driver?  Are you running SSD?

Zigzag,

Marvell SE9230 Driver Version: 1.2.0.1032  Driver Date: 10/9/2012 and is still the current driver offered by the MB MFR ASRock.

Assuming windows disc management numbers the discs in the same way, disc 3 is actually on the HighPoint RocketRAID 2720SGL card. It is 3 2TB Seagate Barracuda ST2000DM001 in RAID 5. Disc 2 would be the OCZ Vector 256GB SSD program drive, which is on the Intel controller.

The ASRock Fatal1ty X79 Champion has both Intel and Marvell Controllers on it, and I did have a HyperDuo (SSD+HDD/Disc 0 + Disc 1) setup on the Marvell chip, but I deleted it a while ago, and is now just the 1TB HDD (Disc 0) and is the only drive on the Marvell controller.

Is it possible that there’s some sort of conflict between the HighPoint and Marvell controllers, or that I didn't remove the hyperduo properly? Still not sure how that would relate to Disc 3 though since the hyperduo used Discs 0 and 1.

Does this info help at all, or am I way off?

The analysis may be useful but is too granular for Xperf.  Diagnosing from a distance is somewhat limited.  For us to get very detailed we would need to attach windbg to your machine locally.

Given you have a hybrid drive I would update firmware.

I really cant tell you about either HP or Marvel without a full memory DMP using windbg attached to the machine.

Might be time to start thinking about a clean install.

Zigzag,

Ha! I knew that was coming! Clean installs fix everything.

It was actually one of the first things that crossed my mind, but I wanted to make a diligent attempt to fix it since a clean install on this rig could take days. Ugh.

I'd love to know what the heart of the problem is though. I could go through a clean install and still have the same problem. I'm kinda suspicious about the HighPoint RAID card since it was the one thing I kinda went cheap on, but other users had really good experiences with it. -I don't know.

How involved is windbg? Is it something worth trying, or have you had enough of this charity case? lol.

Thanks again for all of your help. It's been a fun and interesting experience.

I am a huge fan of clean installs.  In fact I do them every 4 months whether I need them or not and have it down to a science so I can clean install and be back within an hour (from USB of course)

On the other hand I am not a huge fan of RAID.  It is an old technology the is fraught with possible problems.  So I am not qualified to comment on Highpoint, or any other RAID.  (win 8 storage devices is an easier way to mirror data)

Windbg isnt rocket science but it does have a steep learning curve.  If you want to do it yourself you will need to download symbols (in my case 50 gigs of them) and read anything you can find on analyzing DMP files.

It usually takes about 6-12 months before the light bulb truly comes on.  If you do decide to do this feel free to contact me via email for some sources etc.

@XPROCKS  Xperf is a way cool tool but not that hard to learn.  Same holds true for you.  If you want source material contact me via email.

There is so many things I dont know it would fill a book.  I am just terminally curious.  I read.
