Six of these errors: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling ConvertStingSidToSid The security Id structure is invalid

Tried backup 4 times, backing up to a WD USB 1TB MY Passport drive.  It looks like every thing was save, but I don't the the structure of all the zips.

It created a system image for 2 drives XpWDC80G (C;)  containing XP and W7WDC500G containing Windows 7, Is there any why of knowing if the restore will work?

It would be nice to be able to attach a word document with screen shots.

Hi David,

1. When do you get these error messages?

2. Are you using any non-Microsoft application to backup?

Please try the following methods and check if it helps:

Method 1:

Anti-virus applications are known to not allow the backups to take place. Try disabling them and check it helps.

Disable antivirus software

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Disable-antivirus-software

Important Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 2:

I would recommend you to place the computer in clean boot and then check if the issue persists or not.

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, make sure to put the computer to start as usual as mentioned in Step 7 in the above KB article.

If the issue doesn’t persists when the Computer is in clean boot, then the issue is confirmed to be caused by a certain non-Microsoft applications.

Hope this information is useful.

2. Are you using any non-Microsoft application to backup? NO
I’m using Microsoft Security Essentials, does it need to be disabled?

Hi Sharath Srinvasa,

Should I disable Microsoft Secutiy Essentials?

I perform a clean boot and ran the backup and had the same results.

Here a complete copy of all the errors from the event viewer.

Hi David,

Perform the following methods and check if it helps.

Method 1:

Follow the steps as mentioned below:

1. First check for un-resolvable SIDs in the 'Administrators' group on the SCVMM source machine. If any exist, delete them.

2. Open regedit (Registry Editor) and locate 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList' key.

3. Under the ProfileList subkey, delete any subkey that is named SID.bak.

Note: SID is a placeholder for the security identifier (SID) of the user account that is experiencing the problem. The SID.bak subkey should contain a ProfileImagePath registry entry that points to the original profile folder of the user account that is experiencing the problem.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756/

Disabling Microsoft Security Essentials or the Windows Defender is not required.

Hope this information is helpful.

I didn't find any subkey SID.bak  in the registry under 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList'.

their was one .bak file but it didn't end with SID.bak.

I don't understand what System Center Virtual Machine Manager has to do with my desktop single machine?

I been on the web trying to find out how i can find messed up SIDs and how to remove them with out any success.

Still don't understand why the backup fails at the end.

have you ever been able to run a  back up succesfully?  If it has worked for you then you could try a system restore.  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore

I like Windows but the backup utility in Windows 7 has its flaws.  Just a little corky, i guess.  But you should just backup your data to your external drive by drag and drop folders.  There are also third party backup utilities out there that are a little more reliable.

I never been able to use Windows 7 backup.  The Western Digital backup software that came with the passport also doesn't work.  It got screw up because their are  XP and Windows on different drives. After discussing it with WD, they suggested that I keep using free backup software I been using.

The problem is it can't do imcremental backups and takes for ever to zip up 60 Gig of data.

You are going to need to back up your data on your external drive and wipe it clean. Then use the software from WD to format the drive.  Can you complete a backup to dvd's without any issues? I would try to complete a backup to a different external drive or even a flash drive that is large enough just to see if you are getting the same error.

As you can read from my previous post "The Western Digital backup software that came with the passport also doesn't work. It got screw up because there are XP and Windows on different drives. After discussing it with WD, they suggested that I keep using free backup software I had been using.”
Unfortunately, the my DVD hardware will not record.  The system software and other DVD tools say the DVD is functioning ok, but I don’t think it can detect all hardware failures.   No flash drives big enough to backup half a TB.

Thanks for your replay
