You're not making things difficult, these are all reasonable questions. I've been doing this online for over 12 years now - and have been working as a PC Tech since I retired from the US Army in 2003.
The error that you got from Event Viewer is a Critical Kernel Power Error. Also commonly known as the Event ID 41 error - it's simply an error that says Windows shut down unexpectedly, but we don't know why.
In most cases these are hardware errors - with the most common thing being overheating (but there are many, many other causes).
Check to make sure the system isn't overheating. If it's a Desktop, open up the side and point a house fan into the case on high and see if that slows down the BSOD's.
DO NOT touch anything inside the case while it's plugged into the wall. But have a look to make sure that the fans are all spinning and that the coolers (particularly the CPU and the video card) aren't blocked up with dirt/dust/hairballs/etc.
If it's a laptop, blow out the vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or a vacuum as they can damage components). Then use a laptop cooling pad to make sure that the system is getting lot's of cool air.
Disabling drivers deliberately is OK (and I also wonder about the conflicts between similar drivers). But, sometimes the drivers for the device load before the device is disabled - so it's better to disable these devices in the BIOS. If not possible, then
please:
- re-enable the device
- update it's drivers
- then disable it again
If you want to use the USB key, go ahead. The program will wipe everything off the USB key, so make sure that you have the data backed up before you start it. Just follow the directions - you won't hurt anything.
You'll need to run
all the diagnostic tests from this link:
http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
Please post back with the results as you complete the tests.
Good luck!
