Resource and Preformance Index Monitor shows 1 Motherboard device configured Fail Count

After running Resource and Preformance Index Monitor (Due to re-occuring BSOD), it shows 1 Motherboard device Configured Fail Count as well as one plug and play device. Is there a way to fix this/would this be the cause of the BSODs? I have already went through device manager and updated all the devices, even the hidden ones.

Here are the results:

I'm not familiar with the report that you generated, but I can help with the BSOD"s:

Please provide the following information to help us figure out the problem:

    - Please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory

    - Upload it to the Public area of a SkyDrive account ( https://skydrive.live.com )

    - Post a link here so we can download it.

and

    - Go to Start (or press the “Win” and “R” keys at the same time), type in "msinfo32" and press Enter

    - When the utility opens, save a copy of it as an .nfo file, and another copy as a .txt file (in case the .nfo is corrupted - which happens fairly often)

    - Zip them up and upload them to the Public area of a SkyDrive account ( https://skydrive.live.com )

    - Post a link here so we can download it.

Use SkyDrive to upload the collected files:

Aren't there any memory dumps?

Intel Display Audio is disabled.  Is this deliberate?  If so, why?

Nothing else significant in the MSINFO32 reports.

If you're not getting memory dumps, then please start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html

I went into the Event Manager and got a copy of the latest BSOD error:

As for the audio driver, I turned it off as I read BSOD's can be caused by two drivers that handle the same thing competing for use (Realtek is my primary audio device).

As for the memory tests, I am kind of flustered as to which I should be downloading, I have a USB (does it need to be blank?) Is Download - Auto-installer for USB Key (Win 9x/2k/xp/7) the right one? I just follow the queue's and it should instal?

Sorry if I'm making things to difficult,

Shawn

You're not making things difficult, these are all reasonable questions.  I've been doing this online for over 12 years now - and have been working as a PC Tech since I retired from the US Army in 2003.

The error that you got from Event Viewer is a Critical Kernel Power Error.  Also commonly known as the Event ID 41 error - it's simply an error that says Windows shut down unexpectedly, but we don't know why.

In most cases these are hardware errors - with the most common thing being overheating (but there are many, many other causes).

Check to make sure the system isn't overheating.  If it's a Desktop, open up the side and point a house fan into the case on high and see if that slows down the BSOD's.  DO NOT touch anything inside the case while it's plugged into the wall.  But have a look to make sure that the fans are all spinning and that the coolers (particularly the CPU and the video card) aren't blocked up with dirt/dust/hairballs/etc.

If it's a laptop, blow out the vents with canned air (DO NOT use an air compressor or a vacuum as they can damage components).  Then use a laptop cooling pad to make sure that the system is getting lot's of cool air.

Disabling drivers deliberately is OK (and I also wonder about the conflicts between similar drivers).  But, sometimes the drivers for the device load before the device is disabled - so it's better to disable these devices in the BIOS.  If not possible, then please:
- re-enable the device
- update it's drivers
- then disable it again

If you want to use the USB key, go ahead.  The program will wipe everything off the USB key, so make sure that you have the data backed up before you start it.  Just follow the directions - you won't hurt anything.

You'll need to run all the diagnostic tests from this link:   http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html
Please post back with the results as you complete the tests.

Good luck!

I'm going to run the tests this weekend (as I need my laptop for class until then), but on a side note I don't think its overheating. When I play Starcraft 2 i turn on FPS toggle which shows the temperature usually around 65-72 degrees. (I read this temp is OK for most CPU's)

I got another error today after having to hard shut down after my game of starcraft froze and I quit out to the desktop. None of my desktop items were there (minus the reycle bin) and I got an error saying:

The instruction at 0xf3838a87 referenced memory at 0x0000000. The memory could not be read. HIt okay to terminate the program.

I will post back over the weekend what I find out.

Thanks again,

Shawn

The message about "the instruction at..." should have a description in the title bar of the window that it opened in.  That'll help us determine what was crashing (but I suspect Starcraft2 )

CPU temp is high, but not unreasonably so for a laptop.  BUT, the heat may affect other components - which then crash.

Try a laptop cooling pad, blowing the vents out with canned air, and generally keeping the laptop on a hard surface when you're gaming.

Finish up the diagnostics and we'll see where to go from there.

Good luck!

The error message was under 'explorer.exe'.

In response to the fan, I do use a cooling pad and I'm generally pretty careful with my stuff and play on a flat surface where the vents can get at air.

I have also been getting a 'Failure to display security and shutdown options' error, which I'm unsure of the title bar.

I have ran memtest and everything came back okay, I let it do two passes with no errors found.

Is there any other tests that would target my motherboard (or do you think that is even where the issue is?)

Shawn

What's the make and model of you laptop?  I've seen a number of issues with overheating video on the Asus G73 series laptops.

Unfortunately, there are no tests that that are 100% accurate for the motherboard.
Continue to run all the diagnostic tests that I suggested - they test most of the components.
Determining that it's the motherboard is a matter of elimination - and there's not much else we can do with a laptop (as most of the parts are soldered onto the motherboard).

And, replacing a motherboard in a laptop can get expensive - sometimes costing more than the laptop itself.  Also, some laptops have other replaceable parts - but that varies from system to system.  Pay particular attention to the temperature results in the FurMark stress test - if the temps continue to soar, you may have an overheating video card

If no temps show, then you have to judge by the performance of the test.  In other words, if the test get's all distorted, crashes, etc - then it's likely that the video card is overheating.  Shut the system down immediately!

I tend to think that most errors of this sort (explorer.exe) aren't really the result of a problem with explorer.exe (as it's one of the protected files that Windows keeps track of) - but rather it's another symptom of the system having other issues (such as overheating).

I have a Samsung RF711 So5-CA. It is still under warranty so I have sent it in before, each time they said they could find nothing wrong yet the errors continue.

I'll continue to run the tests and get back to you with any results.
