Old DOS programs won't run in Win7 Professional (64 bit)

I have Win7 Professional (64 bit) with Virtual Machine and XP Mode installed.  I am trying to run some old DOS programs like Quick Basic V4.5.  I have tried running it under normal Win7, XP Mode and DOS Prompt in both normal Win7 and XP Mode.  I keep getting the error message that "this file (program) is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running".  Is there any work-around for this problem?  Would installing Win7 Professional (32 bit) solve this problem?  Note, these programs run OK on my 5 year old Compaq Presario V2000 laptop which is running on the "real" Win XP.

Answer

Try DOSBox http://www.dosbox.com/ or install DOS in a virtual machine under Windows Virtual PC.

DOS is not supported under Windows Virtual PC, but may work.
