How to change HotKey's function opening Windows Media Player

I use Lenovo G570. There are few hot keys that can be used to operate music player. Unfortunately, the Windows Media Player is the default player but I use VLC.

I wonder if anyone could tell me how to change the HotKey's functions so that it operates VLC player.

Actually, I found a solution in Lenovo Forums where they referred to change the registry keys of media player. Although it worked fine but doesn't work at all times. I mean, when I minimize the player, it isn't working.

Here is the link to lenovo forums thread: LINK

Briefly here is the solution they offered:

1) Open regedit
2) go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer
3) locate the key called "Installation Directory" and rename it to "Installation DirectoryBAK" to make a backup
4) create a new string key called "Installation Directory"
5) edit it and put whatever path you want, but different from the one from "Installation DirectoryBAK"
6) close the registery and give it a try !!

I wish to hear a better and perfect solution for this problem

I would probably take this one to technet to see if there is a better answer than what Lenovo has.
