Hi,

What exactly do you mean by ‘Changed a .dll file to a notepad’? Did you change the file extension or file association?

If you are trying to change the file extension then refer the following article.

File names and file name extensions: frequently asked questions.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/File-names-and-file-name-extensions-frequently-asked-questions

If you are have changed file association settings to open a ‘dll’ with notepad the try the following steps to revert back the changes.

You can try the following steps and check the status,

a)    Click on start.

b)    Type ‘regedit’ in the search textbox and click enter to open registry editor window

c)    Navigate to the following location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExt.

d)    Expand the ‘OpenWithList’ and to the right double click to open the file ‘a’ and remove ‘Notepad’ and click on ‘OK’.

e)    Now delete the ‘UserChoice’ folder under ‘.dll’.

f)    Close the registry editor windows and restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. All you did was tell the computer that if you are going to open a .dll that you want to open it in notepad. The computer will still interact with them normally, so there shouldn't be any problems.

As I said in my previous reply, doing that doesn't cause any harm to the computer. The files all still have the .dll file extension and function the exact same as before you selected notepad.

All you did was tell the computer if you, the user, try to open any .dll file, then the computer should attempt to open the file in notepad. Programs using the .dll files just see them as .dll files, they don't try to open them in notepad, they open them the way they are supposed to.
