Does a messy desktop slow down your computer?

I have heard that having a lot of documents, pictures and files on my desktop can slow down my computer.  My computer runs windows 7 and has plenty of hard drive space available.

If you mean you have lots of files saved to your desktop, as apposed to shortcuts, the desktop is not the place to save files to - thats like having a draw just full of paperwork thats not in any order, makes it easy to lose / displace stuff
