Back-up fails error 0x8007045d & 0x807012d chkdsk/r fails with invalid parameter

I am trying to backup my laptop to an external hard drive with which i have had no problem until now. I am using windows 7 and have a 64bit machine, so far i have reset my back-up settings i have formatted my exeternal drive, i have performed a disk check using the "tools" in properties as every time i try run "cmd" chkdsk/g (as in " g drive") it says invalid parameter as well as trying a registry fix. My device manager says my external drive is working fine and after each failed back-up there are files written to that drive, what now?
