windows 7 10 second freezes

I installed windows 7 on a new hard drive.  Immediately I started getting short system hangs. The drive light comes on steadily and the freezes last for about 10 seconds.  During that time my mouse will still move although clicking anywhere either does nothing or brings up the 'not responding' box.  These freezes can occur every 2 minutes or not for an hour or more.  It doesn't matter if I am in firefox surfing, listening to music, or just sitting with the desktop displayed and doing nothing.

I have an intel E6700 with 4GbRAM

What have I checked:

I have updated my drivers.  (SB XFi, ATI5850)

I have tried a clean boot but the problem still persists

I have checked online for solutions

I uninstalled my bit defender (problem still existed so reinstalled)

I stopped all unnecessary services, windows media player, indexing, etc.

There are no errors shown in the logs when this occurs.

If this problem can't be solved, I want my money back and will happily return to Vista 64 which I did not have any problems with.

I have found the problem.  Although my drive was brand new, it was a dud.  I downloaded seatools which showed me it was faulty.  I have replaced the faulty drive with ANOTHER new drive (western digital this time) and am no longer having problems.

Thank you for your suggestions though.
