XP computer asks for a password to access folder over network

I am connected to my XP network with my Windows 7 laptop.  I can see 3 other XP machines and 2 of them I can double click and see their shared folders.  The one I want is asking for a name and password to logon.  This XP machine does not have a password to logon.  What is even stranger is 2 days ago no password was required to logon this pc.

Password-protected sharing is enabled by default in Windows. If Password-protected sharing isn’t enabled, it shouldn’t prompt you for name and password in the first place which is weird in this scenario.

Please cross check if there’s any password set on the concerned XP computer.

1. Go to Start > Control Panel.
2. Select your user name.
3. On the left panel, click on manage network password.
4. Click on it and select remove password.

This should remove any network password if set.

On xp machine I went into control panel.  There is no choice called user name in control panel of xp machine. 

The win 7 pc gives me a message that I do not have permisssion to access\\PUGHXP.

Here’s a detailed instruction to navigate to “Manage my network passwords”. Should have provided in the first post. My bad!

In Control Panel, click User Accounts under Pick a category to open the User Accounts dialog box.

 Open the Stored User Names and Passwords dialog box; to do so, use the appropriate method:
• If you log on with a limited account:
      a. Under Related Tasks, click Manage my network passwords.
• If you log on with an account with administrative privileges:
Under or pick an account to change, click your user account to open the “What do you want to change about your account?” dialog box.
     Under Related Tasks, click the Manage my network passwords.

A list of stored user names and passwords similar to the following example is displayed.

To remove a credential:
 
1. In the Stored User Names and Passwords dialog box, click the credential that you want, and then click Remove. The following message is displayed:
The selected logon information will be deleted.
2. Click OK.
3. In the Stored User Names and Passwords dialog box, click Close.

As for the permission issue, try giving permissions to everyone in the Share.

1) Right-click the Share, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.
2) Click on Add button.
3) Type everyone in the box and click Ok.
4) To allow permission, in the Permissions for...box, select the Allow check box.

It is something in the advanced network setting.  It involves the toggling the Homegroups settings and then logging out and back in to win 7 account. A bug maybe?

It appears to be randomly asking for password and then when you toggle connections it may not.

You can use an asterisk as a "wildcard" character. The following example entries are valid server names:
*.Microsoft.com
  • less specific set of resources: *.domain.forest.com (all resources in domain.forest.com)
  • very general set of resources: *.forest.com (all resources in forest.com)
This is not valid in Windows 7? Cannot possible to utilize "wildcards"?

Had same problem.

Found that I could access the xp shares by just putting in the workgroup name with no password.

This all started after I installed a new router.

Found out that when I started the XP machine it would be assigned a new IP address.

Fixed it by going into the router settings and reserving the IP address to the mac address of the nik on the XP machine.

Hope this helps some people.
