Question

Q: Xbox 360 can't connect to my laptop through ad hoc connection. This thread is locked from future replies

I'm in university halls with only 1 ethernet connection in my room. I wish to run my 360 online and also my laptop at the same time.  I have my laptop connected to the ethernet cable and a few days ago I tired setting up an ad hoc network which initially worked. I could play games online. However I decided to try to set media centre up. It wanted me to change my network from 'g' to 'a' (forgive me I'm not too sure what the actual name for these are). So I hunted around my laptop for it and found a way through my wireless devices settings. I changed it and ever since then my 360 hasn't been able to connect via ad hoc even after I changed it back. It's not just internet, it just won't connect to my laptop at all. I'm not that technical. I get by better than most I'd say but please try to keep things simplified for me. Also I'm not sure what version of W7 I'm using but I installed it on christmas day if that's any help. Another thing which I noticed is that my laptop was actually connected to the ad hoc network the first time. When I went into my network settings it came up with both my ethernet connection and my ad hoc wireless connection. Now the best I can do when I connect is get a 'waiting for users' message and it never actually says in my network centre I'm connected.

Another side note is that when I was connected through ad hoc the first time it wouldn't allow me to join xbox live parties but it does when I use the ethernet cable.

Hi Ritzi,

1.      You can perform system restore. Restore the system to the date it was working fine. Below link will help you perform System restore: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/System-Restore-frequently-asked-questions

2.      If that does not resolve you may try reconnecting the network to XBOX and check if it helps. You may follow the below steps:

First Navigate to: Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.

Now that you are in network connections make sure that there are only two icons in here that being

1. Wireless

2. Local Area Connection,

These are the only two connections that should be there

Now go into the properties of the wireless connection and make sure you have unchecked “allow other network users to connect thought this computers Internet connection” Uncheck the box and click OK

Now reboot the computer

When you are up and running again navigate back to:
Start > Network > Network and Sharing Center > Manage Network Connections.

Enable Local area connection if it’s not all ready, go to the properties and double click “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” with will open the properties, ensure that “Obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically” are both checked click OK.

Now go to the properties of the wireless connection, on the sharing tab check both boxes and click OK.

go to the properties of the local area connection once again and open up 4 (TCP/IPv4) again and you should now see that’s its changed to
IP 192.168.0.1
subnet 255.255.255.0
default gateway -empty-

And that use the following DNS server addresses is now checked.

This should now allow you to connect to Xbox live with via the Ethernet cable from your laptop to your Xbox.
