WLAN Autoconfig service error 3222070536

I have been running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit for some time now without any problems. Today I could not connect to the internet using my wireless adapter and this showed no available networks. When I checked the event log I saw these two event messages in the System log.

Event ID 4002 WLAN Autoconfig service has failed ot start - Error code 3222070536

Event ID 7023 The WLAN Autoconfig service terminated with the following error - %%-1072896760

I have Norton 360 with upto date virus definiations but a full scan reveals nothing. The wireless network was working OK yesterday (4th December). The last software installed was an update to Apple iTunes done on 3rd December (Wirelss network was working OK afterwards). I have installed no new hardware.

I tried to do a systenm restore to a previous restore point but I get the follwoing errors:

Event ID 8193 and Event ID 13, both related to instantiating the VSS service.

My wireless network card is a Linksys WMP600N

Can anyone shed any light in what this problem is please?

Hi Kcharters,

Method 1

Make sure that the WLAN Autoconfig service is running on the computer.

a)   Click on  Start, right-click Computer, and then click  Manage.

b)   In Computer Management (Local), click  Services and Applications, and then click Services.

c)    In the details pane, under Name, navigate to  WLAN AutoConfig.

d)   Right-click WLAN AutoConfig, click  Properties, and then on the  General tab, do the following:

1.    In Startup type, select  Automatic.

2.    In Service Status, click  Start.

e)   Click OK.

Method 2

If you are unable to start theWLAN AutoConfig service then I would suggest that you temporary disable Norton 360 on the computer and later try start the service.

Disable antivirus software

Method 3

If the above step fails then I would suggest that you check the status of the wireless adapter in the device manager.

a)   Open Device Manager by clicking the  Start button

b)   Click Control Panel, click  System and Security, and then, under  System, click Device Manager. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I have tried all 3 methods. Method one produces the same two error as at system boot. Method 2 just did not work. Method 3 the wireless card has the latest driver installed and is reported as working correctly BUT also I have ASUS Express Gate which provides access to the internet BEFORE Windows is booted and this works fine with my wireless card.
