Can't connect to internet - "Unidentified network"

Hi all,
I am having the much talked about Can't connect to internet - "Unidentified network"
This problem seems to be random. What I mean by that is that sometimes a warm restart will activate it again and at other times only a cold start will work.
I think I have checked and tried all the methods out there on the internet to fix this; however I may have missed something obvious.

I have a backup PC that I use to connect to the internet when I have the above problem so I can read all the possible solutions.

The question is why can I connect with the old PC that is running the same windows 7 ultimate 64 bit talking to the same wired router using the same windows A/V and not with my main PC that gets the Can't connect to internet - "Unidentified network" ?

Is there a definitive test procedure that will find the problem?

Can I use event viewer; what would I look for?

Hi,

As you are able to access Internet from another computer, it appears to be an issue specific to this computer and its connection to the wired router.

To help you with the issue, please answer the following questions:

1.  What are the troubleshooting steps you have performed?

2.  What is the make and model of your computer?

3.  Are you using iTunes application?

Let’s refer to the following suggestions and check.

Method 1: Let’s assign IP address and check if you get the error.

Go to start and type cmd in the search field.

Right-click on cmd listed and click on “Run as Administrator”.

Once the command prompt opens, type the following command.

        Ipconfig /all

        Hit Enter

        Note the

Check if the following are parameters are assigned:

                    Ip address

                    Subnet Mask

                    Default Gateway

                    DHCP Server

                    DNS Servers

You may post here the results of IP config for us to have a look.

I would suggest you to assign static IP address and check.

You may use the following link for your reference:

https://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/sag_tcpip_pro_manualconfig.mspx?mfr=true

Method 2: Let’s reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Winsock then check if the internet works fine.

Follow these suggestions:

a.  Type “cmd” on the Start menu.

b.  Right-click on it and select “Run as administrator”.

c.  In the Command prompt.

d. Copy paste the below command and hit Enter

netsh int ip reset reset.log

This command will reset the TCP/IP

e. Copy paste the below command and hit Enter

netsh winsock reset catalog

This command will reset the Winsock

f.  Now restart the computer and check.

Hope this helps and do let us know if you need any assistance. We will be glad to help.

Connected ok this morning; however I have noticed this in the events...

x2 event 1001 Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0x02004C4F4F50. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.

The day before there were 6 1001 events

The day before the above 12 1001 events.

How do I cure that problem.

Hi,

It appears that your computer was not assigned an address from DHCP server.

Let's disable IPv6 and check if it helps.

a.     Right click on the Network icon in the System Tray and click on Network and Sharing center.

b.     Click on Change Adapter settings.

c.     Right click on Network Adapter and Choose ‘Properties’.

d.     Uncheck “Internet Protocol Version 6”.

e.     Click on OK.

Note: By disabling IPv6, you will not be able to use Windows Meeting Space or any application that relies on the Windows Peer-to-Peer Networking platform.

If the above fails, please perform the methods suggested in the previous post and check if it fixes the issue.

Thank you.
