'Account could not be created. Error: The E-mail address is already in use' while signing up to ASP.NET

While trying to sign up to asp.net I get the following message: 'Account could not be created. Error: The E-mail address is already in use.'

Of course it is in use! It's what I am signed in with!

I cannot change my email address when trying to create a user name because it's greyed out, and whichever user name I create - even the most obscure with numbers, spaces, and underscores - is not accepted because 'The E-mail address is already in use'

How do I escape from this 'circle' of poor account creation management?
