USB Mass Storage Device Not Recognized

I have a Maxtor 3200 external drive which has been working fine with Windows 7 Home Edition.  However, today I cannot get it recognized by Windows.  It is listed in Control Panel-->Open Devices and Printers and shows "The device is working properly."  It also appears in the list on the icon ot safely shutdown devices.  But it is NOT showing in Windows Explorer so I cannot access any of the data on this Maxtor external hard drive which I need to be able to do.

When I connect a USB flash drive, Windows does recognize it.
