Recovering unused disk space

Just received a notification (acting like a download) "recovering unused disk space" after exiting Windows Live Mail. My OS is 7x64 IE9. Don't ever recall getting this message B/4. Just exactly does this mean? Input anyone?

I hadn't heard of that before either.  This week, however, I'm seeing it almost every time I log off of Windows Live Mail.  Is there any way I can reset the hundred count?  Or any other suggestion?  Thanks!
