Incompatible print settings error message

My HP V40xi printer prints only part of a page.  One cause might be the "Incompatible print settings" message I get.  It says "One of the conflicting settings is Resolution  300 x 300 dots per inch and Print Mode auto select."  What does this mean?  What should I do?

With 64-bit Windows 7 on a new Dell desktop with an HP40xi multifunction printer, print fails after printing part of the page.  I downloaded the MS update that provides a new driver for this printer.  I have tried most of the solutions suggested here.  Occasionally, if I stop and start the spooler, the first page prints OK.  I'm running out of ideas (and out of my mind).  Pleaase help me.

Hi Bobbobg,

-       Have you connected the printer through USB?

-       Do you receive any error message while printing?

-       Does this happen with any particular document or program or with all the documents and programs on the computer?

However, I tried to check for the latest printer drivers on HP website and found the information that we need to use the inbox drivers and Windows update to install the printer drivers for this model of printer.

First I would suggest you to uninstall all the printer drivers on the computer from programs and features. Also remove the printer from Devices and Printers. Also keep the printer disconnected from the computer. Later run Windows update on your computer. Restart the computer.

After following the above steps connect the printer to the computer and try to add the printer manually. To add the pritner manually follow the steps below:

1.     Open Devices and Printers by clicking the Start button, and then, on the Start menu, clicking Devices and Printers.

2.     Click Add a printer.

3.     In the Add Printer wizard, click Add a local printer.

4.     On the Choose a printer port page, make sure that the Use an existing port button and the recommended printer port are selected, and then click Next.

5.     On the Install the printer driver page, select the printer manufacturer and model, and then click Next.

·         If your printer isn't listed, click Windows Update, and then wait while Windows checks for additional drivers.

·         If none are available and you have the installation CD, click Have Disk, and then browse to the folder where the printer driver is located. (For additional help, consult the printer manual.)

6.     Complete the additional steps in the wizard, and then click Finish.

Access the link below to know how to add and remove printers in Windows 7.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-a-printer

After following the above steps check if you can print properly.

Hope this helps. Let us know the results.

Wow!  Thank you.  I will try to follow your recommendations.  First, however, I don't  know how to identify printer drivers on the programs and features list.  There must be another way to delete them.

Re your questions:  It is a USB connection.  The error message is failed to print.  It seems to happen with all applications.

Hi bobbobg,

Check the below link from HP which mentions that the printer is not compatible with Windows 7: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01796879&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=60630

As a work around install the printer in compatibility mode, you may refer the below link: Make older programs run in this version of Windows: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Make-older-programs-run-in-this-version-of-Windows

Hi Bobbobg,

You may try to verify if you are able to print a test page from Windows on your computer.

To print test page follow the steps below:

1. Open Printers by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Devices and Printers, and then clicking Printers.

2. Right-click the printer that you want to test, and then click Properties.

3. On the General tab in the Printer Properties dialog box, click Print Test Page.

Access the link below to know more about Print a test page:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows7/Print-a-test-page

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to contact HP printer support to verify if there are any settings that needs to be changed and check if there are any updates to fix this issue.

Sorry.  In step 2 above, you have to click printer properties, not properties.  Then the print test page option is available.  I tried that, and the printer failed to complete printing the test page, just as it fails all the time.
