Q: USB Thumb drives, External HD not shutting down This thread is locked from future replies

When I finish using my USB thumb drive, or external hard drive and click the icon for "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" and click "Remove", the message pops up saying the drive can be safely removed - but the drive light stays illuminated on the thumb drive or the external drive.  If I pull the thumb drive out, the next time I use it I'm informed that there may be errors and I'm given the option to Scan and Fix the drive or Continue Without Scanning.  Because of this problem, I always shut the PC down before removing the External Hard Drive (its light stays on as well).

Is there some way to correct this?
