USB flash/hard drives not recognized on brand new Dell Studio 540 with Windows 7 home edition
Since purchasing my computer, I've been able to use the various USB drives for other hardware such as wireless internet, Hauppage TV reception, and wireless mouse/keyboard. However, any attempt at reading an external flash drive (then larger external
hard drive) on all of the ports the drive is not successful. The drive appears in the device manager and is appropriately named, it is also listed in the disk management window as disc 5 (underneath the various SD drive ports and whatnot-one of which appears
to be assigned the name of USB external hard drive when in fact it is not). Upon attempt to reassign a drive path/letter the message appears that "Disk Management console view not up to date", but restarting does no good. Dell support is not supportive and
claim it is a software problem because the ports work for other devices.
