Graphics driver is not working properly after Update

Hi, I have a Dell studio 15 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Intel i3 processor, 4GB RAM and 1GB Graphic card (AMD MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470), About 2 months ago, I had updated my graphics driver from Dell. After the Update my computer started to have errors like shut down without warning, Display isn't responding and sometimes a blue screen appears. So now, I downloaded the recommended driver directly from AMD website and also installed it. But the problem is not solved. Some of the problems I got when using my system are:

1) Sudden Blue screen errors ( with indication of 'atimdag.sys' file name. ).

2) Cannot open Adobe After effects application or similar softwares which is somewhat unusual.

3) On opening photoshop, I receive an error "Photoshop has encountered a problem with the display driver, and has temporarily disabled GPU enhancements. Check the video card manufacturer's website for the latest software"

4) Cannot play some games in better quality now (FarCry, etc.). I used to play these games with high quality before.

5) Unable to play High quality videos especially bluray ( tried with different Video players, but the player hangs. )

What solution I tried:
1) Reinstalled video driver few times.
2) Tried to find a solution through System file checker tool it was clean, it says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
3) Tried to restore to an earlier point.
4) Checked with 'BluescreenView' software. It showed two errors and the log is below...

PLEASE NOTE THAT: Answers to reinstall windows 7 are not recommended, because I haven't created a backup of my computer yet and some of the softwares cannot be reinstalled (Because some softwares I use have only one time license like cinema 4d student edition, etc.).

This is the third time I am posting this same problem. None of the solutions worked. Link to original post is below

Given the state you are in - backup before you do much of anything else.

Why can some of the software not be installed again?  Seems strange.

Hi,

If you are sure that the issue which you are facing has started after updating the graphics driver then you might want to restore the driver for a device to a previous version.

Hi,

Ofcourse I have done the roll back to the driver. And now it is 'Roll back' button is disabled. But the problems are the same. Does that really work in my case? Because I have already tried to update the driver 3 to 4 times before.
Additionally, I checked the bill (which came with the purchase of my laptop). It has all the details of drivers and softwares installed. And it showed the graphic driver version is 'ATI MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470' and incidentally it is the same version which is installed in my computer now. Now the only thing which I seem to be visually different is the CATALYST CONTROL CENTER's Interface. ( I don't know if that is the problem )

Other problems which I face with the hardware is the overheating problem. I don't know if that is the problem. I mentioned it just to make sure you have all the information to effitiently analyse the cause.

Thank you

Hi, I have a Dell studio 15 laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Intel i3 processor, 4GB RAM and 1GB Graphic card (AMD MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470),

Is that a typo (AMD MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470) and if it isn't, you probably have the wrong driver. Your system shipped with ATI Mobility Radeon  HD 4570, not  ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470.        ....FWIW

Dell Studio 15 specs.

What you said is the specs of Dell studio 15 (1555), but mine is Dell studio 15 (1558). And as I said above, the bill also shows the AMD MOBILITY RADEON HD 5470 as my video driver.

According to this:
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/dell-studio-15-1558.aspx

The specifications for for the Dell Studio 15 (1558) include:
     ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570

But I too thought that a third party site might be incorrect...  so I went to Dell to look at the Drivers and Downloads they had available for the system - as that can tell you the many different configurations they once had available for a particular model (as some components can be upgraded at time of purchase or they may change as time passes.)
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/studio-1558?~srd=true&sk=dell%20studio%201558&scat=sup

And they list these as possible AMD/ATI video devices:
  • AMD ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3650
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3450
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3650
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3450
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3670
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 565v
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4670
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4330
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5450
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5650
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 / HD4200
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 5730
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 550v
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 540v
  • ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 545v

Which includes the "ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 / HD4200" adapter you state you have.

So...  Where to now?

If it were mine, I would run the AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility and then download the latest driver available from DELL (yeah, that date *is* 7/28/2010) and install it and restart the computer to see what happens.

As it stands - I don't know what happens if you go to the AMD website for the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 / HD4200 and use their AMD Mobility Radeon™ Driver Verification Tool on your system.  I have a feeling they will tell you to obtain the driver from the OEM/manufacturer: Dell.

If that happened to fail... I would run the AMD Catalyst Un-install Utility and then download the beta driver available from AMD and install it and restart the computer to see what happens.

In addition to, and for verification of Mr  Stanley's recommendation,

Dell Studio 15; Ver: 1558

http://downloads.dell.com/Pages/Drivers/studio-1558.html

You can see from the list that the latest version of the video driver was release on 7/28/2010.

I did all you have recommended but nothing turned out to be working. Well I also tried to install the beta driver only to find that my display turned larger (Like in safe mode). This also had problems while using like software freezing on opening, And on starting some games like age of empires, the display showed some weird colors, etc. So I rolled back to the previous driver.

My computer also overheats while playing games. So do you think this may be the reason behind the problem?
Anyway thank you for your help.
Now this problem is freaking me out!
