Answer
Answer

First disconnect any external devices connected to the computer except the mouse and keyboard.

This error usually happens if the hard drive is not getting detected by the operating system or due to bad hard drive.

First check if all the physical connections to the computer are set correctly.
If it is a laptop remove the laptop battery, wait for 5 minutes and then connect back the battery, check if it works.

If the above step does not work then you will need to run CHKDSK tool to check if there are any bad sectors on the hard drive would suggest running chkdsk which would scan for any bad sectors on the hard drive and if those errors are repairable if would repair and if it cannot at the end of the chkdsk scan you would see a message “found one or more unrecoverable error on the hard drive” which means the hard drive is damaged.

If you have a Windows Vista installation disc, you need to restart (boot) your computer using the installation disc. If you do not restart your computer from the disc, the option to repair your computer will not appear.

1.  Insert the installation disc.
 2.  Restart your computer.
Click the Start button, click the arrow next to the Lock button , and then click Restart.
 3.  If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
Note: If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check the information that came with your computer. You may need to change your computer's BIOS settings. For more information, see BIOS: frequently asked questions.
4.  Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
 5.  Click Repair your computer.
 6.  Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
 7.  On the System Recovery Options menu, click command prompt and in the command prompt type chkdsk /f and wait till the scan is completed and later restart the computer and check what happens.

Important: While performing chkdsk on the hard drive if any bad sectors are found on the hard drive when chkdsk tries to repair that sector if any data available on that might be lost.

Hope this helps!

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps: (you need a Vista Installation Disk to do this)
 1.      Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.

2.      Press a key when you are prompted.

3.      Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then clickNext.

4.      ClickRepair your computer.

5.      Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then clickNext.

6.      In theSystem Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.

7.      TypeBootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

NoteIf rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:

·       bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup

·       c:

·       cd boot

·       attrib bcd -s -h -r

·       ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old

        bootrec /RebuildBcd
