Hi coinneach,

Welcome to Microsoft Answers Forum.
As I see your Canon Lide Scanner is compatible with windows7, the following link will show the compatibility list.
https://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/Search.aspx?type=Hardware&s=canon%20lide%2050&os=64-bit
How ever as I see there was no drivers for windows7 in canon website, so I would suggest you to contact your scanner manufacturer for compatible drivers for windows7; if there are no drivers you can install the scanner in vista compatibility mode.
Vista Drivers for Canon Lide 50:

5.In the drop down box select windows Vista
6.Under privilige level check mark "Run this programs as an administrator"7.Click on “Apply”
8.Click on “OK”
