Could not attach the USB device. You can attach the USB device to different USB port or restart the Virtual machine and try again

I Have installed Windows XP Virtual Machine on Win7 Pro, runs just fine, the problem i have is when I use the "USB" tab, attach any device other than a flash drive or the virtual components i get the message pop up:
  •  Could not attach the USB device. You can attach the USB device to different USB port or restart the Virtual machine and try again.

I have tried different devices and get the same message. I have gone into the settings menu and changed the COM1 from none to physical serial port COM1. and even on COM2 and no success.

Original title:Connection of USB device error " Could not attach the USB device."
I have had previous luck with this on another laptop without any problems but this is a new laptop and now it will not recognize any USB device if its not a flashdrive and even that is "shared", when I select  attach, I get the same message as above.

Can someone throw me a bone here? this is costing me a lot of grief and the boss useless time on his payroll
