CD burner won't burn... need to update firmware.

I'm running Windows 7 on a Dell Inspiron 1440, my CD burner has stopped working. I successfully burned one CD today (with photos) but suddenly it can't burn any more CDs and suggests I may need to update my "firmware." What can I do?

CD drives that are bundled with computer can / may require specialized "firmwares" directly from the system maker.  Check on Dell's web site if your computer is "rated" for Windows 7.  Then, check for firmware availability.

If Dell does not provided a firmware update and your computer is capable of running Windows 7 officialy, you may be out of lock and the CD (DVD???) has "died."

Which version of the Windows operating system you have?

Have you made any software or hardware changes on the laptop prior to this issue?

Are you using any third party program to burn CD?

 

Perform the below steps to work on the issue.

 

Step 1: Run automated troubleshooter from the below links.

Fix problems with CD or DVD drives that can’t read or write media

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Step 2: If you have installed any third party program to burn the CD, I suggest you to update the software from the computer manufacture or the software manufacturer.
