USB flash drive & external USB drive, windows 7 problems

I have tried 4 different usb flash drives from different manufacturers and my usb hard drive from Western Digital.  Windows 7 recognizes it until I start transferring files.  Then it can't find the drive.  When I unplug it and plug it back in, I get a notification that the USB device is not recognized.  After I restart the computer, it does the same thing all over again.  I ran Vista before Windows 7 and never had this problem.  I am very frustrated.  Please help.  I must have access to my flash & external drives or Windows 7 is useless to me.  Thanks

Answer
Was any motherboard chipset drivers ever installed on this PC?  Usually, these chipset drivers help Windows to see the on-board devices including USB.
