WMPNetworkSvc - default - should it be disabled and used in sharing

After having an issue with backing up and looking at a workaround as below:

I have a copy of my skydrive down the bottom.

I have noticed that I have an extra permission on sharing my documents and other items.

I changed it to Automatic (delayed Start) as I was unsure what it was in the first place.

Could someone please let me know what the default setting is for the above and what it is used for?

In my experience, the backup fails with the 0x80070002 error because of two things:

1) The built-in administrator account is disabled (it is disabled by default in Win7)

2) The Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service is enabled

2) Disable the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service , this also can be done several ways. The two most common ways are:

OR

  • services.msc
    • click the Start Menu
    • type services.msc in the "search programs and files" entry box (or from Run dialog box)
    • select the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service fro the list at the right
    • right-click it and select properties
    • set Startup type to disabled
    • click Apply
    • click OK
    • restart the computer

  • Hi Melissa,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community Forums.

It looks like you need to more information on 'WMPNetworkSvc' while sharing media files.

WMPNetworkSVC helps windows media player to share its library with network. Check if the windows media player network sharing service is started and set to automatic.

You can open the services windows by clicking on start button and type services.msc then press enter.

Steps to set it to automatic:

    1. Click on start button, type services.msc and press Enter.
    2. Scroll down windows media player network sharing service to the, right click on it and select Properties
    3. Click on General tab, select Automatic for startup type.
    4. Click on Dependences tab and make sure that all the dependences services are set to Automatic. Then click on OK button.

On NTFS volumes, you can set security permissions on files and folders. These permissions grant or deny access to the files and folders.

Why for instance I am having issues at the moment with unlocking some files on my external hard drive.

I am not too sure what the NTFS volumes - what are you referring too?

I have updated the skydrive for the properties of the services, msc section.

In reading the section on file and folder properties - I am currently on a Workgroup and have two computers and finding it difficult to manage what is being seen on each computer and also the private and public users. I think that may be another forum.

I am only a beginner and finding the above a bit difficult. But knowing that I have the correct setting, I feel better.

I have two computers - one Windows 7 64 bit - User-VAIO and Melissa&Grant and I get very confused - hence the big folder on sharing.

I have been getting error meeages occassionally as a file may be open still on the larger computer from a Word document on my Seagate 1TB External Hard Disk Drive - which is the F: drive in the skydrive.

Thanks for your asisstance, for a basic Windows User you certainly have expanded what I did not know.

I have not received a reply - I am having trouble with my 1TB External Hard Disk Drive and I think that this is the problem.

What did you mean by the NTFS volumes?

I have posted the status as you requested - as a result my computer seems to be running slower.

It can be frustrating.  Since I don't work for Microsoft I am just giving personal opinions.

It is "Windows Media Player Networking Sharing Service".

If you want to find out about services in general, open the services control panel.  I typically do this by pressing "Windows Key"-R and entering services.msc.  If you double-click on a service, you will see the Service name: at the top.  That is the best way I know of to correlate the service name, display name, and description of services.

In the description of this service, it states it is for sharing media player libraries with other players and devices.  I take that to mean the system will broadcast network packets describing the video and audio files on your machine (ooh look, Mark just put Beethoven's 5th in his library).  Unless you really want this (generally if you are running a media server), it is not valuable and should be turned off as all services eat up resources.  I turn it off on my machines.

Following your Instructions; "I typically do this by pressing "Windows Key"-R and entering services.msc..".

I pressed the "Windows Key", then "-R" and entered "service.misc".

I get "No items match your search".

I should've known it would be a wild goose chase!

    Hi Mark,

What I meant by "Windows Key"-R is to hold down the Windows key as though it were a shift key and press R

This will bring up the Run dialog box.

In the Open field, type "services.msc" without the quotes.  Then press the "OK" button.

This will bring up the Services control panel:

Double-click or highlight and press 'Enter' to see details about one of the listed services (note the Service name and Display name at the top of the example below):
