Truncated Folder Names ("Extension" Missing)

Windows 7 x32 Home Premium

Hello. I have an odd issue, which I'm sure it easily solved once you know how.

Premise: I backup software discs onto my hard-disk as I have lost softwares in the past due to CD scratches. I have a folder named "Disc Images" and then "CD" as a sub-folder.I typically put each software into its own folder within CD and then name it including the version number. (i.e. "Diablo II 1.03") So the path is as follows: "G:\Disc Images\CD\"

Problem: When browsing the folders through windows explorer, I notice that most of the time my folders have truncated names. Specifically, just some of the version numbers are missing from the title. But, when I click on "properties" and then "sharing" you can clearly see the entire name.

Addendum: Sometimes very rarely, my windows explorer HAS the full filename. The two times that it happened were once when I was viewing the folders through VirtualCloneDrive's "mount image" browser, and once through windows explorer immediately after I had seen the properties of "G:\Disc Images\CD"

Does anybody know why this happens, and how I can fix it?

Here is a link to a picture of what I'm talking about. All the red circles are folders that end in ".XX" where XX are 2 numbers. (i.e. StarCraft 1.07 or Diablo II 1.03)

I don't know the answer but do the folders with truncated names all have a full stop (period) in their names?

I have this exact same problem. Folders with dots (periods) in their names don't show anything after the last dot, i.e, behaves like a hidden file extension. Before you ask, I always use my computer with "Hide extensions for known file types" unchecked, although in that case it doesn't even makes sense. I noticed that in my desktop "folder extensions" are showing properly, but not in others places (windows). This is annoying me beyond ****.

I had this problem for a long time but it's gone since SP1. Have you installed it? If not, I would recommend you to do so.

Yes, I am using Windows 7 x64 fully updated. Thanks for the answer, though.

Just bought a new computer with W7-SP1-x64, and I'm having the same problem.  Never seen this problem before, and it's very annoying.  Would appreciate a solution.

This is crazy... as a software developer I have folders for source control named with versions.
Product.5.0_Branch
Product.5.1_Branch
Product.5.2_Branch
Product.5.3_Branch
Product.5.4_Branch

instead now all I can see is:
Product.5
Product.5
Product.5
Product.5
Product.5

What the heck is the rationale for hiding folder names.

Hey James

Same situation as you with different branches...

... I fixed it using the Fix it tool for files and folder from Microsoft:

I set the tool to fix everything, rebooted and now all is fine.

Good luck :-)
