In Windows 7, Disk cleanup stops working on System Files after installing SP1

Disk cleanup will work for all areas but the system files when it stops working.  With SP1 loaded, it will not do a disk cleanup at all - it just stops.  I really want to remove the Windows.old folder and have tried all other hints such as using CMD.  With C:\>Attrib.... the return is that it can't find the file.  The RD also cant find the file but the DIR shows it well.  Where to from here?  Regards

Thanks for your advice.  I have tried all methods listed in your above, but none have resolved the issue.  The current situation is: Disk Cleanup works but when Clean up system files is selected, I get a message "Disk Space Cleanup Manager has stopped working".  When SP1 is loaded, Disk Cleanup goes immediately to the previous message ie stopped working.

I solved the problem by going to
"HKey Local Machine > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version > Explorer > Volume Caches > System error memory dump files"

and then deleted Default value data. and now it just works fine!
