how do I fix .msi file extension?

Related to: Windows 8.1 How to set and restore file associations.

About a year or two ago, I tried to open a .msi file in Windows Explorer (on purpose for reasons I no longer care about). Although I can use the "open with" dialog box to specify "Windows Installer" as a temporary workaround, I am having difficulty changing it back to open with Windows Installer by default. Here's what does not work:

  • In "set default programs", Windows Installer is not listed.
  • In "set associations", .msi is not listed.
  • On the right-click context menu for .msi files, "open with" is an option, not a submenu. Even so, in the "Open With" dialog box, "Always use the selected program [...]" is grayed out.

With the situation that I'm in, I think I will need to edit the registry to fix this file association. I am very familiar with the registry editor and have no problem with applying a fix in such a way.
