Hard disk space keeps changing randomly

OP: Wierd Indicator

Usually when you open the My Computer folder it shows the hard disk space, which is quite nice to have but I started to have problems with that indicator a few months ago and it changes without me deleting or adding stuffs into it. For example, Monday it shows: 150 GB free of 285GB. Tuesday it shows: 100GB free of 285GB. Tuesday night, it shows 128GB free of 285GB. I am quite concerned about this because I think I have a virus infection or an error with the indicator.

Hello EricNCH,

This could be due to c:\pagefile.sys or c:\hiberfil.sys that can take up several GB depending on your size of RAM and other parameters. Crash Dump files can take various amount of hard disk space.

To be on a safer side, I suggest that you run disk clean up on your computer and remove all the Temporary files and check if it hard disk space continues to change.

You can refer the below article that will give you information on ‘Delete files using Disk Cleanup’:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Delete-files-using-Disk-Cleanup

Refer the section ‘To clean up all files on the computer’ and delete the restore points except the recent ones.

Also to be sure that this is not caused by a virus infection, I suggest that you run a Malware scan on your computer. Run Windows Live OneCare online scan on your computer: http://onecare.live.com/site/en-my/default.htm?mkt=en-my
