Windows 7 Clock Gadget no longer available?

While it was in the upper right corner of my Desktop earlier this evening, the round-faced Clock Gadget has disappeared, to be replaced by a black square with an unmoving red second hand.   I closed it, and tried to replace the round-faced clock, only to get the black square again.  I tried to Restore Gadgets, and was told "There were no Windows or administrative gadgets to restore".   "sfc/scannow" did not restore anything.   The download site says Gadgets are no longer available -- that they've been replaced by apps for Windows 8.  Does that mean that the round-faced clock gadget is no more?  (Also confused due to 64-bit computer apparently thinking it's 32-bit now.  'Tis a puzzlement.)

Hi,

Thank you for posting in the Microsoft Communities.

Based on the issue description, it appears that you’re facing issues on gadget.

Please provide us the answers to the following questions to help you troubleshoot the issue better.

1.       Were there any recent changes made to the computer prior to the issue?

2.       Do other gadgets work fine?

Please go ahead and follow the methods mentioned and later update us on the status of the issue.

Method 1: Try to reset the Sidebar to Defaults and check if the issue persists.

a)       Copy and paste the following text into your Start Search field exactly as it is below and press Enter.

%localappdata%\microsoft\Windows Sidebar

b)       Typically you will only see two items a Gadgets folder, and a Settings file.

c)       Close Windows Sidebar if it is open – or you will be unable to complete the next step.

d)       Right-click on the Settings file, and select Rename, and change the file name to Settings.old

e)       Now open Windows Sidebar, and everything should be set to defaults.

f)        You can now add your gadgets, and customize the sidebar to your preference.

Method 2: Windows 7 gadgets may not work or be displayed correctly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657
