Volume icon (speaker) is gone. Turned off in control panel and greyed out.

Windows 7 the volume icon suddenly missing from the system tray. When I went to the control panel to turn the icon on again it was greyed out and I can't turn it on.

There would seem to be a problem with your audio hardware or driver. Click Start (or tap the Windows Key) and type device manager then hit <enter>.

Look for yellow exclamation marks or red ×'s noting problems with hardware or small down arrows noting disabled hardware. Try right clicking and selecting Update driver software. More information and resources on each device are available from right click, Properties.

You can also Uninstall the hardware and restart the computer. If there is nothing physically wrong with the hardware or drivers, it should reinstall to defaults using existing drivers when Windows starts up.

You can also visit your computer manufacturer's support web site to download/install the latest drivers and configuration/diagnostic software for your device. If you have trouble with this, post back with the make and model of your computer and we'll try to assist.

  • Have you tried turning it off and then on again?
