Show windows side by side does not work with a HP Pavilion g7-1303sa laptop

Let us suppose I have 2 documents open in MS Word called Document 1 and Document 2. If I right click in the taskbar and then select “Cascade windows"  the result is as it should be.

If I right click in the taskbar and select EITHER “Show Windows Stacked” OR “Show windows side by side” the result is two windows stacked on the left half of the screen.

I can get the windows to display side by selecting one of the documents,  holding the “Windows” key on the keyboard and the clicking the right arrow followed by selecting the other document, holding the “Windows” key on the keyboard and clicking the left arrow on the keyboard
