Gadgets do not display correctly....

At some point over the last 3 weeks, the 3 default gadgets on my desktop have ceased to display properly.  I see only their windows 'handles' (x, move, the ! icon--which gives the context menu on right click), but the area they would display in is blank.  Attempts to add new gadgets result in the same behavior.  I've tried disabling/enabling the Gadget platform.  How to correct?
