BITS service problem -Windows 10

I have now upgraded to Windows 10 but when I try to download the latest Windows Updates they all fail.

The problem seems to be that I cannot start the Background Intelligent Transfer Service.

The Event Log says "The BITS service failed to start error 0x80070002.

Another entry states that the BITS service terminated because the system cannot find the specified file.

I have searched the internet but nothing I have found resolves the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting Microsoft Community. Your interest in Windows 10 is much appreciated.

I suggest you to perform the below methods and check if it helps.

Method 1: I suggest you to perform System File Checker (SFC) scan, to repair the missing/corrupted system files.

  1. Press ‘Windows + X’ keys.

  2. Click on ‘Command Prompt (Admin)’ to bring up an elevated command prompt.

  3. Note: Click ‘Yes’ if it prompts for permission.

  4. In the command prompt type in the following command and then press Enter.

sfc /scannow

Method 2:  Also try to perform DISM Tool, DISM tool can be used to repair the windows files which may be a possible cause of this issue. This will also help in resolving other issues which you have found in the log files of SFC scan.

Follow the steps below to run the DISM tool.

1. Press Windows key + X.

2. Click Command prompt (admin).

3. Copy the following commands one by one and paste them in the Command Prompt Window:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/Scanhealth

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image/Restorehealth

Note: As the keyboard shortcuts don't work in command prompt please use right click to paste.

Hope this information was helpful and do let us know if you need further assistance. We will be glad to assist.

The scannow option found errors but did not solve the BITS problem.

The DISM options came back with Scanhealth and Restorehealth options UNKNOWN!

Any more help would be appreciated.

As silly as it is, it appears that capitalization is quite key here. Mine was returning those as Unknown as well, but proceeded when typed instead as

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

While the operation completed and did not appear to find any issues, this did not resolve my issue regarding BITS either.

Tried both of these.  Neither works.  it says the cleanup-image/restorehealth option is unknown.  Tells me to refer to the help by running DISM.exe/?  I am a novice, and have no clue what to do next.  Nothing seems to work.

I have tried this and several other Microsoft Tech Support fixes and nothing is working. My Windows 10 Store is completely gone also. I have tried the powershell command line prompts given by Microsoft Tech Support for that as well and nothing seems to fix this.

When I run the Windows 10 Troubleshooter for Updates, it tells me that the Service registration is missing or corrupt, but says it gets fixed. Nothing works, so I run the troubleshooter for windows updates again and it finds the same issue and "fixes" it again. I highly doubt that the problem is being fixed, unless it breaks instantly after being fixed.

I am also unable to connect to my SQL Server Management Studio database. The program says the networked computer is unreachable, but the computer selected is the local host. I don't understand.  The SQL instance will start and instantly stop every time.

Whenever I try to update and restart my Windows 10 Asus laptop gives a blue or black screen with the Windows 10 "thinking circles" and never starts. I left it alone for over 12 hours one day and it never got passed a blank screen. I hold the power button until it turns off and then turn it back on and some times it loads Windows 10.

All of these problems did not occur until a few months ago when one of the automatic, windows 10 cummulative updates ran in the background.

In newer versions of Windows 10, try:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

Using DISM.EXE for me always returned with error 87.
