Processor support for Windows 10

Hi,

I have read that you need your processor to support the following extensions: SSE2, NX, PAE for Win 10.

Does the Windows 10 Check My PC app actually scan for those specific features?

So far it has not reported any hardware problems for an upgrade to Win10 on my PC (running Win 7 Pro 64 bit).

But I'm not convinced that my CPU has SSE2, NX and PAE features.

Is there any way of checking if my CPU is definitely compatible?

(its an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ processor 2.8 GHz).

Thank you.

You can use CPU-Z as an alternative to confirm:

You can determine if your processor has those instructions by using a free tool called CPU-Z. Once you have it installed, double click it and it will scan your system. Click the CPU tab and look in the Instructions field.

If your PC doesn't support PAE, NX, and SSE2, you won’t be able to install Windows 8.1. When you download Windows 8.1 from the Store or run Upgrade Assistant, we’ll let you know if your processor doesn't support PAE and SSE2, if it might not support NX, or if NX is turned off in the PC BIOS. If NX appears to be off, the installer will try to turn it on during installation and, if it can't, it will return your PC to the current operating system.

How to turn on NX in the BIOS

You can check if your processor supports NX and turn it on if it is turned off by going into your PC's BIOS. How you get to the BIOS varies, depending on your PC manufacturer. On most PCs, you need to press a key (like F2, F12, Delete, or Esc) or a key combination immediately after you turn on your PC, but before Windows starts. For details, check the info that came with your PC or your PC manufacturer's website.

Once you're in the BIOS, look for the NX or XD settings on the Security tab to turn on NX support. If the BIOS setting for NX support isn't available on your PC, you might need to contact the PC manufacturer for info on updating the BIOS. If you need help getting to the BIOS on your PC or turning on NX, contact support.

Thank you so much for the advice.

Is there a proper Win 10 upgrade assistant as well  that can be downloaded too?

Hi. I have a couple of Intel machines (we are a licensed refurbisher) that When I run CPU-Z it shows that

it supports SSE2. When I check the BIOS it shows that it supports XD (Intel's version of NX) and as  I

understand it, XD/NX requires PAE to run. I also ran a MS tool (wbemtest) that showed that PAE eas 'true'.

When I tried to update these Windows 7 machines, both came back with a 'NX' not supported

error. I checked  to see if DEP recognizes hardware protection (XD) and it did. At the bottom, it shows hardware protection. So far, I have been unsuccessful in updating either machine from the Migration Tool.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Doug Schwark

Hi,

I have the same problem upgrade to windows 10 for AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ processor 2.8 GHz fails since cpu isn't supported.

Running SiSoftware shows that the processor supports PAE, NX, and SSE2.

So big question is that even though the cpu supports all these features, the upgrade process still fails

Thank you.

With Windows 7 or 8.1 active, open All programs, select Accessories, Right click on

'Command Prompt' and select Run As Administrator. In the command box that

opens, Type "BCDEDIT /Set NX AlwaysOn" without the quotes. It should say

that it was successful.

To make sure that it set NX correctly, Type "BCDEDIT" without the quotes and

see if NX is set to ALwaysOn.

If so, you should now be able to installed Windows 10.
