Windows 10 media creation tool can't find USB

I'm trying to make a USB for the windows 10 install. I'm using the Windows 10 media creation tool to create that USB. When I get to the area that says would you like to create the USB or ISO file I select USB. When I click Next, it tells me that the USB cannot be found. I have tried this on two separate computers and get the same results. In addition I can navigate using file explorer and see the USB but the creation tool will not find it. Does anybody have any help with this?

In case anyone is running into this problem here is what I did to get it to work. I bought a Sandisk USB drive for the purpose of making a Boot USB of Windows 10(not knowing about the Windows Sandisk issue). At first the media creation tool didn't see my USB while windows explorer saw it perfectly fine. Tried multiple USB drives on the front of my desktop, Sadly not one was visible.

I formated the USB drive from FAT32 to NTFS, this didn't solve the issue.

Then I plugged the USB drive in an USB port in the back of the computer(one that is directly on the motherboard). The Windows media creation tool saw the USB drive immediately.

Hopefully this helps someone.

Hi,

Thank you for showing interest in Windows 10.

If you are getting error message stating to contact manufacturer of your computer then there might be a chance that some hardware might not be compatible or the drivers are not present.

So, I would suggest you to check the system requirements before installing Windows 10. You may refer to the article mentioned below and see if it helps you to find out the requirements.

Before you install

You may refer the article mentioned below to update the drivers on Windows 10 computer.

I purchased the upgrade that purported to allow me to upgrade from Win 7 pro to Win 10 pro.  Twice I have had repeated failures to launch from both a USB and DVD.  Each and every time, even after the "appropriate" looking upgrades to Win 7, the initial start up after loading and entry of the KEY goes to "repair" and each and every option chosen leads to cancellation of attempts or statement that it cannot be repaired.  Luckily the first series of failures I pulled out with a total restoration of the initial Win7.  I attempted on another PC and the same results appeared.  Same string of failures and bad software engineering from Microsoft being the only constant I can surmise between the two.  Suggestions before I use this PC for a paperweight and the Win 10 upgrade as a bookmark?

I can't get the Creation tool to recognize a PNY brand 16GB USB.  So frustrating!

I had the same problem. The current version doesn't work on my Windows 7 laptop, the version 10.0.10586.117 which you pointed to sees the USB drives, and works as expected. Thanks!

Another brilliant MS upgrade tool... ;-)

Had exact same problem, found a fix.

I formatted the USB stick to NTFS, rebooted system.

Then I right clicked the USB drive and selected "open as portable device".

The installer then recognized it right away.

This is how I got around this nonsense while installing Windows 10 on my girlfriend's laptop...

1. Download the tool as if you were going to use a DVD and let the ISO install.
2. Use Rufus tool to reformat the Sandisk stick to NTFS format with a cluster size of 4096 bytes and in the "Create a boot disk using.." select the CD looking icon and then choose the ISO. Set Partition scheme "for BIOS or UEFI"
3. Select Start and wait Rufus should make a bootable ISO
4. Buy you and someone a glass of scotch and toast to my health.

Remember your mileage may vary. You can get Rufus here.. https://rufus.akeo.ie/

I support the Internet of Things for one of those companies a lot of people use but that they may have never heard of.

Windows at work. Linux and Chromebook at home.

Shame on MS. This is plain ****. There is no any problem with any commercial USB sticks. The only problem is with this shameful tool not wanted to recognize them for nobody knows what reason.

SOLUTION:

- Download an ISO file

- Use a 3rd party SW (Rufus) to create a bootable USB from the ISO.

unbelievable

Hey Micro@#$%$#,

its been a year and six months and still no fix for the not finding a scandisk usb drive issue?

Really?

and you are cramming yet another broken operating system down our throats if we want to upgrade to new hardware

no one really wants windows 10 in the first place

the LEAST you could do is fix the Media creation tool

I bought a new usb drive today to create an installer for windows 10 and spent nearly six hours trying different ways to get this to work only to end up finding out that this has been a known problem for an unacceptably long time

The very least you could do is post a warning about the problem on the download page so people dont waste their time and money

I did not succeed in solving the USB problem but I bypassed it using a third party software - Rufus. That allowed me to use one of the 'failed ' USB sticks to create a reinstall tool. Worked. Shocking that Microsoft created a recovery tool with an issue of its own and still has not fixed it.
