Windows 10 Installation Error 0xc1900101 - 0x20004

I cannot install Windows 10. Every time at 84% of the file phase, and at 25% of the total installation phase I get one of two BSODs:

When I load my machine back up, this is the screen I get:

0xc1900101 - 0x20004
The installation failed in the safe_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation.

Steps I took:

Downloaded everything, deleted DLed files after initial installation attempt, re-downloaded and it failed.
Turned off Windows Defender (only AV) / Windows Firewall.

Ensured no excess programs were on during initial install process.

I believe it's some kind of driver issue, but it would make no sense as to why that would hold up the installation of an OS.

I had recently reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 8, then upgraded to 8.1 -- so there's not a lot of excess files on my PC.

It reinstalled without issue.

Can anyone offer any insight?

I got this error with the official Windows 10 ISO.

So I think that's not the solution unfortunately.

I've compiled a blog post with several workarounds and also an explanation - maybe it will be helpful.

Solution quite simple but i did all your reasearch like you guys. I was on an HP Pavilion G6-2244ca and went attempt to upgrade was receeving 0xc1900101-0x2000c error. So decided to try to download the iso getting the error 0xc1900101-0x20004 this time.

Nothing about the disk partition or antivirus the issue was related to the bios. I downloaded all drivers and bios from HP site completed all update then did the upgrade without any issue.

Hope this will help.

All the responses are trial and error. Where is the definitive response that error  0xc1900101 - 0x20004

is caused by .... When Microsoft coded the installation this error code was given as a result of a specific error.

Given that Microsoft do not want to be hassled by users one would hope they would come to this site and respond to the question. Error code X is caused by condition Y. Instead we have the situation where everyone is groping in the dark and no-one actually knows what the solution is. A few people find this solution useful and a few others that solution, but there is no one solution that all users can use. The reason why some users find a solution useful is that in the process of getting there they actually do half a dozen other things as well. There is some thing, or combination of things, that solves the problem, but no-one (including apparently Microsoft themselves) knows what it is.

This type of thing is what one can expect from a third rate software house, not the world's leading software developer. Instead of using their profits to enhance the support of their products they rely on the user community for support. And the user community has no idea, other than trial and error. This is  huge waste of consumer time as people often spend days trying to resolve an issue, which often remains unresolved.
