Send Feedback to MS Developers

Have you ever had a problem with Windows or a MS program that you wanted fixed?

Have you ever wanted Windows or a MS program to do something "more, a new feature?

.

Of course you have!

.

Shouting at your monitor does not work ...

Posting in Technet, or MSDN or Answers forums does not work ...

Talking to MS Support does not seem to do anything useful. They seem to be sending your suggestions and complaints into the "bit bucket", or a black hole.

.

Well now there is a place, a feature, you can use where you KNOW MS developers and Managers well see your submission. It is called

FEEDBACK

And you even sometimes get to see an actual response from someone in MS now you can use

.

What "Feedback" to Post?

There are 2 main categories of Feedback to MS. One is "bug reports, the other is Suggestions.

Bug Reports

If you have a problem with a MS application where it is crashing or not working properly you can submit a bug report.  How do you know it is a "real" bug?  If you can consistently recreate the problem on your machine and at least one other, then it can be considered a bug.

Create explicit step by step instructions on how to trigger this bug.

Describe exactly what to look for when the bug happens.

If you can, create a file that demonstrates the bug. Upload it to your OneDrive and provide a Share/Edit link to it in the feedback

New Feature Requests

If there is something new you would like an application to do, a "new feature request", this is the place to submit it.

.

Is this Real, or just more Propaganda?

Plus Side ....

In a question on the Answers.com forum I have seen responses from MS employees that indicated that "they" (MS) really are reading and reacting to the suggestion box ideas, ie:

https://office.uservoice.com/forums/285186-general/suggestions/9906966-office-2016-quick-access-toolbar-too-wide )

.

Now I've seen independent "proof" that someone at MS does at least seem to look at the suggestions:

Why Didn’t Windows Fix My Pet Peeve?

https://askleo.com/windows-fix-pet-peeve/

The author, Leo, used to work for MS, so even though this is a general problem in computing (aka "priorities"), he does have inside insight.

<snip>

Windows can't fix all the bugs on each release. I'll look at some of the reasons Windows might not fix something you consider important.

</snip>

Does MS Listen to User Feedback?

This blog:

https://powerpivotpro.com/2013/03/a-funny-thing-happened-in-redmond/

In the blog entry above by Rob Collie a former MS employee, and now PowerPoint MVP he provides a roundabout insight to confirm that MS does listen. He is talking about the issue back in Office 2013 when MS was not providing PowerPivot to all of the Office bundles, especially consumer bundles. A lot of people stood up to be counted to eventually convince MS to provide the PowerPivot feature to everyone.

.

Minus side: Windows 10 1809 bungle: We won't miss early problem reports again, says Microsoft

https://www.zdnet.com/article/windows-10-1809-bungle-we-wont-miss-early-problem-reports-again-says-microsoft/

Right, where have we heard that before ...

like that was the whole point of the "Insider" program, Insiders reported the problems, ... which MS didn't act on ...

.

<snip>

it was discovered that many testers had already reported the same file-deletion problems that prompted Microsoft to halt the Windows 10 October 2018 Update.

</snip>

<snip>

Microsoft could have fixed this issue if only its engineers had noticed multiple reports from Windows insiders on Microsoft's Feedback Hub about data loss after upgrading.

</snip>

<snip>

However, as noted by Microsoft watcher Rafael Rivera, there are "tons of reports in Feedback about data loss on upgrade" to version 1809, and the reports were neither up-voted by users nor grouped in Collections, resulting in high-severity issues being buried.

</snip>

This article is discouraging.  The Feedback system in combination with the Insider program worked.  Insiders found a serious problem and reported it in Feedback.  But the feedback system did not group the many postings so no one at MS recognized the significance of the problem.  <sigh>.

.

Minus Side: Yes, but ...

There is another downside to feedback. Although they count the number of comments and "votes" they are just information. I have seen feedbacks that had thousands of votes and that are years old, that have not been acted on.

.

We can submit suggestions and bug reports, but ultimately someone at MS has to decide to fund the work to make it happen.  Individually, and "corporately", they have their own vision for the applications and they don't agree with all of the feedback we provide.

How to Send "Feedback" to MS

.

You can do this 4 ways, depending on the specific issue:

  1. MS has added the new "Feedback Hub" applet to Windows 10
  2. MS has added new "Feedback" features to some applications, like Office Apps
  3. MS has created Feedback web pages for various applications on the "UserVoice" forum/website
  4. MS has create specific methods of submitting feedback for Mac OS

.

Which is "Best": Windows Hub, Feedback in Application or UserVoice?

None, they are supposed to all feed information to the same destination. The only difference is the point of origination.

Personally, given the option, I prefer the Windows 10 Feedback Hub. You can use it to find ALL of your submissions made through the Hub.

UserVoice is a good alternative because you can use it to find the submissions you have made. But your search is limited to each website.

Feedback in the application is very unsatisfactory, but it is the (slightly) better than nothing.  It is totally a one way feed, so you don't know what is happening. There is no way to vote for other peoples submissions or see the (minimal) responses from MS.

.

.

#1: Send feedback to Microsoft with the Windows Feedback Hub app <WIN><F>

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4021566/windows-10-send-feedback-to-microsoft-with-feedback-hub-app

There are real MS staff and developers who monitor all submissions to the UserVoice forums whether you submit them through the Feedback Hub, or by using the Feedback command built in to some MS applications, like Office 2016, or by using the appropriate link directly

 .

.

In this screen capture I clicked on the "Show category suggestions"  to expand it. The suggestions are auto-generated based on the content of your submission. If you don't find a likely pair, you can click on the drop down and select something different.

.

.

NOTE: BEFORE entering your feedback, ESPECIALLY when you have crash problems or driver problems where you are willing to share configuration information from your system, click on the link to “go to diagnostic and usage data settings”. This takes you to the settings dialog for “Feedback & Diagnostics”.  This dialog allows you to specify “Basic” or “Full”. Personally I prefer basic most of the time. But when it is display or driver issues it would be a good idea to set it to “FULL”.

 .

Note: make sure to click on “Problem” or “Suggestion” radio button at top of dialog. You can’t submit until one is selected.

 .

Note: After you input the description you are asked to pick categories to put the submission in to.  Clicking on the drop downs is slow and confusing. Instead, click on the “Show category suggestions” hyperlink. It often provides reasonable pairs you can select from.

 .

Note: there is a special check box for “problem with how text is displayed

 .

Note: there is a special category for “Driver” issues, as shown in the screen capture

 .

Here is what an Existing Feedback looks like:

You want to get a link to your feedback:

  1. submit it
  2. wait a few minutes (5-10)
  3. go to the Feedback list view (third button from top, "person sitting in front of a monitor)
  4. click on the "My Feedback" heading to filter it for your submissions.
  5. click on the sort category, probably defaulted to "Trending", and select "Most Recent".
  6. go read some email, or play a game, whatever to kill a few minutes
  7. click on your recent submission
  8. click on the "Share" button I've highlighted above
NOTE: depending on the width of your application window the "Share" button may be hiding on the right side of the window
  9. click on "copy" to get the link
  10. Paste the link in a reply to your original question

This way when someone searches and finds your original question they have direct access to your feedback. Then they can go to the feedback, "up-vote" it and add their own comments (I've highlighted the new comment area) to it.  The more votes, the more likely MS is to act on the feedback. But it is not a sure thing.

You should also click on the "What we do with feedback" link that I highlighted. It takes you to a long article describing what is done with feedback.

Use Win10 Feedback Hub To Capture Errors

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/msoffice_install-mso_win10/office-365-deployment-tool-ignores-part-of-the/a2a7c12b-12f0-4ecb-9343-8994037706fb?msgId=2223d383-61cc-48dc-b489-7464791359f6

Softie Devlin Sco suggested using the Win 10 Feedback Hub to capture errors to submit to MS. I am waiting for confirmation that it can be used to capture, and submit to MS Support, Office installation errors.

NOTE: If you do submit a suggestion to UserVoice, please copy the link and post it back here in a reply so that other people can more easily find it and vote to support it and add their comments.

 .

In order to submit new feedback, please follow these steps:

1.   On a Windows 10 device, search for “Feedback Hub” in Cortana search, then launch the app.

2.   Navigate to Feedback in the left menu, then press + Add new feedback.

3.   Select the Problem, and share any details you think are relevant, and choose an appropriate category and subcategory

Important: If possible, reproduce the problem(s) (ie what ever action triggers the error) after clicking Begin monitoring (or Start capture) near the end of the form; Stop monitoring when you’re done recreating the problem.

4.   Once you’ve completed the form and monitoring, click Submit

5.   Click Continue using Feedback Hub

6.   Click My feedback at the top, then find the item you submitted (it may take a while to appear)

7.   Open the item you submitted, then click Share

8.   Click Copy link, then paste the link here in your response (it will look like https://aka.ms/ <unique link>)

#2: Feedback Feature in MS Applications

.

.

Windows Office 2016 applications now have the File menu > Feedback command.

.

The 2 “smiley face” buttons just submit ideas, with no possibility of feedback.  The third “I Have a Suggestion” button connects you to the appropriate “UserVoice” subsite.  There you can make a suggestion. During the start of the process it does a keyword search looking for similar existing suggestions. You can pick an existing suggestion to vote for (and add a comment to or you can submit a new suggestion.  Copy the link to the suggestion and post it back in the Answers forum if you had a question started there.

But when it is display or driver issues it would be a good idea to set it to “FULL”.

 .

Note: there is a special check box for “problem with how text is displayed

 .

Note: there is a special category for “Driver” issues

 .

Note: When you look at existing feedbacks there is a “Share” button near the top left side of the dialog to get a link to the suggestion. That button is NOT present when creating a new feedback.  You have to submit it, then in the Feedback Hub home you have to click on “My Feedback” at the very top of the screen and select “All Categories” just below that.  Then you can click on your recently submitted suggestion. Now, you can see the “Share” button to get a link you can post back to the forum so other people can comment and vote on the suggestion.

When you click a Help link in Word, we want to take you to helpful information. Sometimes we have a clear idea of what people are looking for, like how to use the Format Painter. But sometimes we don’t yet have an article that meets your needs.

In those cases, please use this discussion to tell us what you’re looking for. What were you working on in Word, and what information did you expect in Help?

In other words, if you tried to use the built in help in Word and it didn’t … help, then post your complaint to the link above. If you have links to the solution to your question, please include them.  And since this question has been asked by MS developers, they will look into the question and hopefully provide a reply with “inside” information.

#3: Feedback using UserVoice Forum

.

Developers at MS setup many "feedback" subsites / web pages for specific Applications on the "UserVoice" forum. When you go to these web pages, read them carefully. They are setup individually so there is no consistent user interface.

.

You can submit suggestions for “new feature requests”, “change existing feature requests” or actual “bug reports” to the forum either by “voting” and commenting on a similar existing suggestion or by creating a new suggestion for others to vote and comment on.

 .

When MS determines there is “enough” interest they will change the status of the post to indicate if they are going to work on it or ignore it.  What is “enough” interest is totally undefined. Some postings have been acted on with only a dozen or 2 votes and comments.  Others (like “bring back Picture Manager” continue to be ignored even though they have several hundred votes and comments.

 .

This next link is a wiki with a collection of MS UserVoice.com sites I’ve encountered (I’m sure there are more):

 .

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-desktop/ms-suggestion-box-sites-at-usdervoicecom/7397119c-6d48-49e6-8d94-7bd0a50d214f

In addition, when you post a suggestion / complaint to UserVoice, if you have reached there by being guided while asking a question in a forum, please post a link back to your suggestion in UserVoice in the original Question. That way other people who see your original question because they are looking for the same fix can easily find your suggestion, vote for it and add supporting comments.

Solve the Word 365/2016 Slow Typing Issue 218 votes Mar 2017
Since Word 2016 was published, it has very serious performance issues on devices with high resolution displays like the Surface Book and Surface Pro. As soon as a document is longer than about 1000 words, there is a terrible typing lag, i.e. text appears on screen much slower than you type.
The typing lag is particularly bad in tables and when markup mode is used.

# 4 Mac Feedback

At this time, to provide feedback in the other Office 2016 for Mac programs:

  • click on the small smiley-face icon in the upper-right corner of the program window,
  • choose Tell Us What Can Be Better.
  • Include a detailed description, a screen shot, if it shows the issue,
  • then Submit the report.
  • The information goes to the Mac development team.

Note:

It didn't actually exist in my MS Outlook for Mac version 16.16. the way it was described in the link above.

However, there is an email form you can fill out when the user clicks on the question mark, so I'll take a try at that.

How do I give MS feedback re Developer Community? The search isn't working, and there's apparently no place to report it.
I would be satisfied just to know whether I have reached a developer at all. These bots are a desaster.
