How to resolve the “api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-1-1.dll is missing or corrupt” error when upgrading to Windows 10

When trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10, the upgrade fails with error code 0x8007007e, and a message that “api-ms-win-core-libraryloader-l1-1-1.dll is missing or corrupt”.  How do I resolve this error?
Answer
Answer

You can resolve this error by replacing a specific DLL file.  Please follow these steps and then retry the upgrade:

  1. Open Windows Explorer.

  2. Locate the file:  C:\Windows\System32\wimgapi.dll

  3. Select the wimgapi.dll file, then right-click the file and select Copy.

  4. Then locate and open the folder:  C:\Windows10Upgrade

  5. Right-click in the open folder and select Paste.

  6. You should see a warning that there’s already a file with the same name at that location.  Select Copy and Replace.
