Fail to upgrade windows 10 from 1803 to 1909

Hi,

I have to upgrade winsows 10 version 1803 to 1909.
I'm using an iso.

But it fails before the first restart

In the log in C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther i've noticed the following lines:

2020-08-28 10:35:33, Error      [0x080389] MIG    Failure while calling IDiscovery->Gather for Plugin={ServerPath="%SYSTEM32%\migration\scmdmigplugin.dll", CLSID={D7A91520-AAFC-416F-9D7B-2C2E933BCAA7}, ThreadingModel=Apartment}. Error: 0x80070002

2020-08-28 10:35:33, Info                  SP     Will add an extra error

2020-08-28 10:35:33, Error                 SP     Error READ, 0x00000002 while gathering/applying object: pre-scan, Action,CMXEPlugin,C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Work\MachineSpecific\Working\agentmgr\CCSIAgent,%SYSTEM32%\migration\scmdmigplugin.dll,{D7A91520-AAFC-416F-9D7B-2C2E933BCAA7},Apartment. Will return 2[gle=0x000000cb]

Is it the root cause of the updrade issue ?

What can i do to fix it ?

Thanks and regards,

Jerome

Hi,
I am Sumit, an Independent Advisor and a 3 year Windows Insider MVP here to help.

Let us check the Installation log to find why the update failed. Please share the following logs:

The Panther logs. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

The Rollback logs: These usually are created if Windows Update rolls back. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Rollback

[Only if the error code is 0xC1900101-0x30018] The Device Install Log from C:/$Windows.~bt\Sources\Rollback\setupapi\setupapi.dev.log

To upload files here, see the following article. You must copy the logs to the desktop first and then upload.

As the log size might be large consider zipping everything before uploading.

The errors you included in your post are very common and are usually ignored.. If the log in the next couple of lines states the migration will be aborted, then you know the cause of the problem.

The logs Sumit requested may give more of a clue.  You can also download and run the setupdiag.exe utility from the site referenced.  If you get that report, you can copy and paste it so we can check it..

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

You can find here https://1drv.ms/u/s!Auht4shwvtUBllP29eZxzoUjDQ2X?e=xOQU3V the log files from the 'Panther' folder. The Rollback folder does not contain any log file.

Thanks and regards,

Jérôme

Thanks Jerome. Apparently, it looks like a plugin failure.

While there is no exact remedy for this, we can continue with hit and trial methods. Logs unfortunately sometimes do not exactly tell what happened.

Put the PC in a clean boot state, turn off everything in Windows features and try again.

Maybe look at this..  You noted this error but it is not tied to the other error..  The lines on the bottom are examples of what it is supposed to be doing instead of throwing an error..  I did find a couple of sites when I searched for GAC root enum.

No need for others except the Panther folder .

The Panther logs. Files named Setupact.log and Setuperr.log from the following path C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Panther

Sorry @Saltgrass, I missed your post and you made a great point - the log repeated the same error you mentioned above, including a mention of IIS as we know :)

2020-09-01 15:06:39, Warning MIG No implementation of IPreGather->PreGather found for Plugin={ServerPath="Microsoft-Windows-IIS-RM\iismig.dll", CLSID={A33259A7-E9DB-4195-A31F-57E3C4D74C49}, ThreadingModel=Apartment}

Jerome, the next step is to put your PC in a clean boot state, turn off everything in the Windows features most specifically IIS and try again.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/7247-turn-w...

If IIS or any plugin is the culprit this should resolve the issue.
